BIG Conference 2026

This year’s BIG Conference was all about Team Science and exploring how working together helps us do even better research. With over 60 researchers attending from every stage of their careers, it was fantastic to see such a strong turnout and so many opportunities for new connections and collaborations.

We started the day by hearing from all our PIs, who introduced themselves and shared their research interests. It was a great reminder of the huge range of expertise and exciting science happening across BIG. We then heard talks showcasing intra-lab collaborations, with projects spanning stroke, cerebrovascular, and Alzheimer’s research.

After lunch, the spotlight turned to some of the newest members of BIG. Our first-year PhD students introduced themselves and their projects, giving everyone a glimpse of the exciting research to come. This was followed by presentations on inter-PI collaborations, covering topics including the NLRP3 inflammasome, iPSCs, and cholesterol handling in ICH.

We were also treated to a surprise talk from Dame Nancy Rothwell, who reflected on the importance of team science and how collaboration has shaped the group since its beginnings. It was fascinating to hear how the collaborative culture we value today has developed over the years and continues to drive new discoveries.

The collaborative theme continued throughout the afternoon, with presentations showcasing partnerships beyond BIG. We heard about collaborations with Manchester hospitals and universities, as well as international research links stretching as far as Spain and Australia, showing just how far teamwork can take great research.

And, of course, no BIG Conference would be complete without a well-earned trip to the pub afterwards! The science discussions may have become a little less formal, but the collaborative spirit certainly carried on.

Overall, it was a fantastic day packed with great science, new ideas, and plenty of opportunities to connect with colleagues old and new. More than anything, it celebrated the incredible range of research across BIG and demonstrated what can happen when talented people come together to tackle important research questions.
