BIG Internships 2026

This month we have had four interns join BIG to gain experience in the lab and learn a wide range of techniques. Read on to find out what they thought of their experience…

This internship has been an incredibly rewarding experience and has confirmed my ambition to pursue a career in neuroscience research. As my first research placement, it provided a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience at a much earlier stage in my degree than is typically available.

Working on projects investigating stroke and dementia allowed me to develop practical laboratory and data analysis skills, critically evaluate scientific literature, and communicate my findings through a presentation. The experience has strengthened my confidence, enhanced my scientific thinking, and given me a much clearer understanding of the research process.

I am extremely grateful to have taken part in such a valuable programme, particularly one that offers first-year students the opportunity to engage in meaningful research and begin developing the skills needed for a future career in science.

Before starting this internship, I knew I enjoyed biology, but I wasn’t completely sure whether research was the career path I wanted to pursue. Over the past three weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to experience what working in a research laboratory is really like, and it’s been one of the most valuable experiences of my degree so far.

Being able to learn techniques such as PCR, Western blotting and microscopy, contribute to research projects, and present my own work has given me a real appreciation for the work that goes into scientific research.

Just as importantly, everyone in the lab was incredibly welcoming, patient, and supportive, creating an environment where I felt comfortable asking questions and learning something new every day.

This opportunity has given me confidence in my abilities, strengthened my practical laboratory skills, and reinforced my interest in pursuing a career in research. I’m incredibly grateful to the entire team for giving me this opportunity and for making the experience so enjoyable and inspiring.
